Investigation of Turbulent Inflow Methods for High Speed Flows

Master Thesis (m/w/d)

About Us

We are an interdisciplinary research team with a focus on high-order numerical, multi-physics simulations

Project Description

The interaction of strong shock waves with turbulent boundary layer, the so-called shock turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI), is a common phenomena in real world compressible flows. STBLI is a complex flow feature with strong pressure and temperature gradients which cause significant issues in the designa and operation of systems that operate in high-speed flows. Despite the importance of STBLIs, they are still relatively poorly understood. Part of the reason for this is the difficulty to accurately replicate the conditions in which STBLIs occur in CFD simulations. To address this issue, this project will examine a number of turbulent inflow methods used to create synthetic turbulence at the inflow boundary of CFD simulations of the STBLI. The effect of each of these methods on the solution of the STBLI problem will measured and compared.
