Disassocating Air Models for High-Hypersonic Flows with DGSEM

Master Thesis (m/w/d)

About Us

We are an interdisciplinary research team with a focus on high-order numerical, multi-physics simulations

Project Description

FLEXI is a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) CFD framework that allows the simulation of a wide variety of flows. One application FLEXI has yet to be tested for is high-hypersonic regimes, such as those experienced by spacecraft during atmospheric reentry. The defining feature of high-hypersonic flow fields are the incredibly strong shock waves which lead to proportionally high temperatures. The effect of these high temperatures is to often cause the diassociation of the air directly behind the shock waves. In order to most accurately characterize high-hypersonic flows in CFD simulations, the chemical kinetics of the diassociating air must also be represented. This project aims to contruct three chemical mechanisms for disassociating air and test those mechanisms with a canonical high-hypersonic problem in FLEXI.
